Furniture Showrooms in Kerala: Kochi and Thrissur

Temple Town has two furniture showrooms in Kerala: the flagship in Kochi, inside the Museum of Kerala History at Edappally, and the original in Thrissur, the city where everything we sell is made. Both are open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

We are a furniture maker founded by Meera Pyarelal in Thrissur in 1999, with more than 1,000 projects completed and over fifty craftsmen in-house, and our work has been published in Architectural Digest India, Elle Decor India and many others. What follows is where to find us, what each showroom is for, and how to judge any furniture shop in Kerala, including ours.

Kochi — the flagship

Temple Town Kochi
Museum of Kerala History, Koonamthai, Edappally, Kochi 682024
Telephone: +91 95676 22265

8,000 square feet over two floors of a renovated traditional Kerala house, furnished as rooms rather than aisles. The largest display of our work anywhere, and the easiest to reach from Ernakulam, Aluva, Kakkanad and the backwater apartments. More about the Kochi showroom.

Thrissur — the original showroom

Temple Town Thrissur
MQPS 306, Cemetery Road, Mission Quarters, Anchery, Thrissur 680001
Telephone: +91 98957 22265

At the design studio, where most of our architects sit. The best place to begin a commission, a made-to-measure piece or a complete interior, and convenient for Palakkad, Guruvayur and Malappuram. More about the Thrissur showroom.

What we make

Handmade furniture in solid, kiln-dried teak: four poster beds, cane and rattan beds, seating including the Kerala plantation chair, tables, cabinets and storage, and accessories. Wardrobes, dining tables, sofas and site joinery are made to commission. Alongside the furniture, the studio designs and executes complete homes — see the project archive.

We work in an idiom we call Heirloom Modernism: Indian craft held to the standard of the world's finest furniture, made to be inherited rather than replaced.

How to choose a furniture shop in Kerala

Kerala has every kind of furniture seller — national chains, online retailers with experience centres, premium showrooms, long-established teak dealers and workshop makers. Which is "best" depends on what you are buying and how long you mean to keep it. For anything you intend to keep for decades, these five questions sort the good from the ordinary:

  1. What is the timber, and is it solid or veneered?
  2. Was it kiln-dried? In Kerala's humidity, unseasoned timber keeps moving after it is delivered. This is the most important question and the one least often asked.
  3. How is it joined? Look inside a drawer and at the back panel.
  4. Who made it? A shop that manufactures what it sells can tell you exactly; a reseller often cannot.
  5. Who repairs it in twenty years?

We have written a longer, honest buyer's guide to furniture shops in Kochi, including when a workshop maker like us is the wrong choice.

When we are the right choice — and when we are not

Come to us for the pieces that will set the character of a house: the bed, the principal seating, the cabinet that will outlive its first owner. Do not come to us to furnish a flat in a fortnight, on a tight budget, or for mattresses, office chairs or mass-market sofa sets. Other shops do those better, and we will say so.
