Luxury Furniture Store in Kochi

Temple Town's Kochi flagship occupies 8,000 square feet over two floors inside the Museum of Kerala History at Koonamthai, Edappally. The building is an old Kerala house, renovated rather than replaced — which is a reasonable summary of the furniture inside it too.

It is not a warehouse showroom. There are no aisles of identical sofas and no sale banners. What is on the floor is handmade furniture in solid teak, made in our own workshop in Thrissur, arranged as it would be in a house.

The showroom is inside the museum grounds, on the Edappally side of the city and easily reached from NH 66 and the Edappally junction. Call ahead if you would like a designer free when you arrive, or contact us to arrange a time.

What we sell, and what we don't

Temple Town is a furniture maker, not a reseller. Nothing on the floor was bought in from a supplier and marked up. Every piece is made by our own craftsmen in our own workshop, from responsibly sourced, kiln-dried teak.

That has consequences worth knowing before you visit:

  • The range is narrow and deep. We make beds, seating, cabinets, tables and accessories to a very high standard. We do not carry mattresses, mass-market sofa sets or office chairs, and we will tell you honestly when another shop is the better place for what you need.
  • Almost everything can be changed. Dimensions, timber finish, cane, upholstery. Most of what we sell is made to order, which means you are not choosing from stock — you are specifying a piece.
  • Lead times are real. Handmade furniture in seasoned teak takes weeks, not days. Anyone promising same-week delivery on solid teak is selling you something else.
  • It is built to be repaired. Cane can be rewoven, teak refinished, joints reset. The workshop that made your piece can restore it in thirty years.

Why buy handmade teak in Kochi

Kochi is a demanding climate for furniture. Sustained monsoon humidity, salt in the air near the backwaters, hard air-conditioning indoors, and an active insect population. Engineered board swells and delaminates. Softwoods move and split. Upholstery holds damp.

Teak is the timber that has answered this for centuries — its natural oils resist water, rot and insects — but only if it has been properly seasoned before it is cut into joinery. Timber that has not been kiln-dried will continue drying inside your flat, opening its joints as it goes. This is the single most common reason expensive furniture fails in Kerala, and it is invisible at the point of sale.

The website carries a selection. The showroom carries more, and the workshop can make a great deal that is on neither — wardrobes, dining tables, sofas and site work are all part of what we manufacture.

Interior design, not only furniture

Temple Town is also an interior design studio. We have designed and executed complete homes across Kerala and beyond — apartments, heritage restorations and new houses — and a good number of our Kochi clients come to us for a single bed and return for the rest of the house.

The philosophy

We work in an idiom we call Heirloom Modernism: Indian craft held to the standard of the world's finest furniture, made to be inherited rather than replaced. Indian form and Western discipline at equal weight, neither used as decoration on the other.

In practice it means the question we ask of a piece is not whether it will last ten years, but whether it will still be worth arguing over when it is divided among grandchildren.

Typically several weeks, depending on the piece and the current workshop schedule. Seasoned timber, hand-cut joinery and hand-woven cane cannot be rushed without cost to the result.

No. The studio was founded in Thrissur in 1999 and the workshop and main office remain there, with showrooms in both Thrissur and Kochi and projects across South India and beyond.
