Regency Teak Arm Chair
Description
An armchair that does not swallow the room
At 60cm in every direction, this is a chair with the presence of an armchair and the footprint of a dining chair. That combination is rarer than it sounds, and it is why this piece ends up in rooms where nothing else fits.
Regency proportion, Indian materials
The form is drawn from Regency cabinetmaking — the arms, the rake of the back, the tapered leg. The materials are Indian: solid teak, and cane woven by hand in our own workshop. Neither tradition is decorating the other; both are doing structural work.
Why cane on an armchair
An upholstered armchair in Kerala holds heat and damp, and after ten years it needs recovering. A caned one breathes, weighs a fraction as much, and ages into a deeper honey. It is the reason the plantation chair took the form it did, and the reasoning has not changed.
